The program would randomly pick a number, you would guess, and it would tell you if you were too high or too low. ![]() It was a program from the big book, a very simple number guessing game. That night, Dad spent hours trying to make a program work. He grabbed the thick BASIC programming book and I grabbed the much thinner Atari BASIC Reference Manual. My dad had just bought our first home computer – an Atari 400, with its staggering 32K of RAM and a cassette recorder to save programs – and he was trying to figure out what the heck to do with it. ![]() ![]() My life in code hackery started around 1982, at 11 years old.
